Day 13: Great views
Was tempted yesterday to call today a rest day. But once I got up, the weather was nice and I was feeling good so I decided to put in a few easy kms.
The views today were incredible. So many viewpoints looking up and down the coast, overlooking cliffs with the ocean rolling against them spraying mist to the skys. Stopped lots today to take photos as each viewpoint seems better than the one before.
Ran into a group of 3 (a couple and a tag along) a few times today as we kept leapfrogging each other. They are heading to San Francisco and San Diego respectively. We exchanged names. They remember mine but I can’t remember theirs so I feel bad about that. Will fix this if I see them again. They did mention a few other cycles a few days ahead of us who are also going to Argentina. Am glad there exist other people doing the same trip as me. It is mad how slowing a little or speeding up a little and you run into a whole new group of people.
I stopped at just 45km of easy riding today at a town called Newport. I hate to admit it but I am staying in a motel again tonight. I justified this saying that 2 days in a real bed roughly equals a rest day, or so I tell myself. So I won’t need to take a full rest day. Also got caught up on washing and this journal.
I brought my bike to a bike shop here. I had hoped to get a full service but the bike mechanic said I would be waiting for a week. So that is a no go. He did take a quick look at my bike and fixed the gear shifting problem I was having. It was due to a bent derailleur. It feels so great to be able to get into my granny gear again. I can’t believe I climbed so many hills without my lowest gear.
Looking forward to getting back to the usual camping route from tomorrow, not least because real beds are expensive AF and my budget does not stretch to real beds more than once a week over the long term.
Not sure of the destination for tomorrow, will check the book and maps in the morning.
