Day 29: Wet day and walk down memory lane

Rain rain, go away
Rain rain, go away

Woke up to rain. Decided wasn’t worth getting out of bed yet so I made coffee from my sleeping bag. I successfully didn’t burn down the tent so that is good.

Had 2 choices for my destination today. First was a 100km cycle which would allow me to get into SF early enough the following day to see some big blue angels military air show. The other option is to have 3 easy days into SF but miss the air show.

Decided to get to the first camp, see how I feel and then decide if I wanted to go further. So with the rain still pouring, I packed up camp. I would likely not see Cris again so said goodbyes, and was off. And what makes cycling in the rain even better is not having rain gear… Opps!

Not normally one for listening to music when cycling but knew it would be a long day of being soaked through so put shuffle mode of all previously liked songs on YouTube. Guess this list is building for 10+ years. This was a hard hitting walk down memory lane. Songs I hadn’t listened to in many many years brought back memories of different times and places and people. So while I was soaked all day, I felt on top of the world. Occasionally I would hit into a song that would resonate for some reason, so would stop the bike and put the song on repeat. One such song was “Weather with you” by a crowded house. Something about cycling in the rain made this funny. Must have listened to this for 1+ hours on repeat.

After 100km, I reached the campground. It was packed with noisy car campers with Children running around. Jullian (french-canadian guy) from past few camps is here. He bought 2 Guinness thinking it would appeal to my Irishness. It worked. One major problem though. We had no glasses. And I would not allow him to drink Guinness from the can. So we ended up cutting off the top of a Gatorade bottle and pouring the pint into this. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I had to pack up camp this morning in the rain and now put up my wet tent in the rain. Fun!

There were racoons roaming around the campground tonight too. Plus there were no bear boxes or anything to put food in. Ended up putting everything into panniers and bringing the panniers into the tent. This is a big no-no for dealing with bears but we reckon there were easier sources of food for raccoons from other lazier car campers than from risking entering a tent with someone in it.
